Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis?
There are many fears and misunderstandings about the use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, and the myths and mystery that surround it are totally undeserved. This page will hopefully help to reassure you.
Hypnosis is usually induced by the use of the therapist's voice, though you are unlikely to actually feel hypnotised. There's no such thing as a 'hypnotised feeling', though many people find their senses to be far more alert than usual - you'll certainly not 'lose control' at any time, nor can you be manipulated in any way.
There's no form of unconsciousness and nobody can be made to do anything that they don't want to do; a person in hypnosis is aware of everything happening around them, aware of themselves and their therapist, and will retain a full and accurate memory of everything afterwards.
Hypnosis, a totally natural phenomenon, is simply a very comfortable and relaxed state during which it's quite easy to converse sensibly with the therapist. Almost anyone can enter the hypnotic state easily, with the exceptions of those with mental impairment, very young children, and anybody under the influence of hard drugs or very large quantities of alcohol.
This is a reliable and safe therapeutic technique which is centuries old and is recognised by many branches of orthodox medicine as a valuable alternative to drugs.
Hypnotherapy and/or EFT can be a very effective treatment method for a great many problems where psychological factors are involved.
How many sessions will I need?
Many problems can be resolved in one session, whilst others may take a little longer, say two or three. This isn’t something that can be easily gauged from the outset as everyone is an individual and can and do, progress at different rates. Often the client’s initial presenting issue is resolved and they wish to continue working with further issues. It is always my intention to address and deal with these in as short a period as possible and the client always leads the way in the number of sessions.
How long is a session?
Anywhere up to two hours as I don't clock-watch and turn a client away after 50 minutes. The session fee therefore represents better value.
What does hypnosis feel like?
You might be surprised to learn that there's no such thing as a 'hypnotised feeling'! In fact, many clients report "I wasn't hypnotised", "I didn't feel anything", "Was I hypnotised?” This is quite normal. The majority of people just feel incredibly relaxed and can hear and respond to my voice throughout the entire session. There's no mystery to hypnosis, but the positive benefits can feel like magic!
Do you use any drugs or tablets at all?
No. Hypnosis is completely natural and drug-free.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes. Anyone can be hypnotised, especially strong minded individuals and those who have a vivid imagination! Exceptions are individuals who are in some way mentally impaired. Excessive use of drugs and alcohol can also hinder the process.
Can I get 'stuck' in hypnosis?
No. We all go into naturally induced hypnotic trances every day, when driving, watching TV, or just daydreaming. All hypnosis does is utilise that state to achieve the required change that you want. If, for any reason, you need to awaken during the session (e.g. in the case of an emergency), you will be fully alert.
Will I be made to do something against my will? Will I be controlled in any way?
No. This is a common misconception which stems from negative media portrayals of hypnosis and some stage hypnosis, so you won't be made to 'quack like a duck' or pretend to be Elvis! You cannot be made to do something that's against your moral code, beliefs and self-preservation. You cannot be controlled or manipulated in any way. If this were to happen, the hypnotic state would be immediately broken. Jackie adheres to a strong code of ethics.
Is hypnosis like sleep?
No. But it looks like you are asleep. It's actually very similar to daydreaming, but with your eyes closed. Quite simply, it's a very relaxed state of mind that you often experience just before you go to sleep at night and just before you wake up in the morning - very pleasant.
How can you solve a problem that I've had for years in a relatively short space of time?
I won't be solving it - YOU will! You're the only person who can. I have the map of how to get you from where you are to where you want to be, but you do the walking. Some problems work like a light bulb - it can take the same amount of time to turn it off as is it did to turn it on…...no matter how long it's been on for…...if that makes sense?
What's my 'subconscious' mind?
Have you even been driving or walking from A to B and when you got to your destination thinking "I don't remember parts of that journey." Well, if you don't remember, then who was doing the walking or driving? Of course it was you, but you did it (or parts of it) subconsciously. The unwanted problem you have runs in the subconscious and so you might not consciously recall how or what sets it off, it just seems to happen.
Will I need a Doctor's referral?
Some problems may require a Doctors letter and this will be discussed on your free initial consultation.
How much does the treatment cost?
With effect from September my charge per session will be £65, though a session can last anywhere up to 2 hours. However, you could always first book a FREE 30 minute initial consultation where you can talk to me about your situation. All you have to lose is about 30 minutes of your time - and your problems! I want you to become another successful client. You can contact me directly by e-mail: jackie@ashtreehouse clinic.co.uk
