Change
What is Change?
Throughout your life you've developed beliefs, attitudes and perceptions that have shaped who you are. Some of these aspects of your thinking help and empower you. Others can drain your energy and subsequently make you physically ill.
For example, you've learned how to think positively so you always have a good attitude about things to come; however, you grind your teeth at night. On one hand, you have mastered a state of resourcefulness by always remaining positive. On the other, you can't rid yourself of some subconscious behaviour which only does you harm. The result is that people see you as a happy and positive person, but you wind up getting headaches and a sore jaw, never really knowing why.
Think of a pink elephant. A funny image that's easy to picture for just about anyone. Now, stop thinking of a pink elephant. Try harder to stop thinking about it. It's not easy to stop thinking about anything. The mind doesn't know "don't" or "stop." It only hears "pink elephants". Pretty soon, all you're thinking about is pink elephants. Now, think of a white cloud. It‘s easy to think of a white cloud. Notice that you're no longer thinking of a pink elephant. Why? This is because you changed your focus. How did you change your focus? You simply broke the pattern. That's how you can initiate change in your life. Beginning first with understanding your thoughts and where they are focused (pink elephant). Then, designing a new thought process (white cloud) and thinking about it. Finally, awakening to the idea that these are just thoughts, and you can exercise free will any time you like.
Remember, focusing on what you don't want or don't like will only get you more of what you don't want. Overweight people think about their weight and how heavy they are. Moments after that thought they are eating a cake or a biscuit. Smokers explain that they continuously think about quitting their smoking habit, only to find themselves smoking a few minutes later. Is the obese person thinking about being fit? Is the smoker thinking about being a non-smoker? The answer is no. They are dwelling on the reverse of an idea. That simply will not get you what you want…ever.
The last thing you want to do is focus on the reverse of an idea. The same is true in changing behaviour or unwanted habits. You must focus on what you want, not what you don't want. This is critical in behaviour modification.
Imagine a desirable outcome: Close your eyes and begin to imagine that part of you is being instructed to change. See the change taking place and feel a sense of gratitude. Imagining what you want is the most critical part of change. Effective visualisation is VERY important to the change process. Learn how to meditate, listen to self-hypnosis cds, seek a hypnotherapist, use any means possible to begin visualising the desired outcome. The key to change is to have something compelling you are drawn to. You need to hold the image of what you are working towards continuously out in front of you.
Practice, Practice and Practice: It's important to understand that in order to begin the process of change, you'll need to begin to start new programs and change the old ones that are running. Then, you'll need to repeat the vision of your new life repeatedly. If you want to eliminate headaches, you need to imagine life without them, how you will walk, the way you'll hold yourself, every aspect of your new life.
